Daunting task indeed. I mean where to start? World Music? Jeez, which part of the world do I start with? Orchestral and Classical? Heck, I am such a fucking nerd that I only consider music to be classical if it was composed during the Classical Period! (1750-1800)

And that goes without saying the difference between Rococo and straight Classical....even the early Romantic.

Then what about the Romantic? That just leads one to think about other things that came out of that. There were the great nationalist composers. Then the Impressionists. ACH!

Then you say....well what about American popular music? Yeah right....that goes from Ragtime to Trip-Hop. Am I supposed to just tell you in a few sentences what I like?

Yeah, what about that jazz? Oh you mean Be-Bop? Swing? Cool? Fusion? Latin Jazz? Hard-Bop? I can name artists i like in each of those categories. I could probably even write a short page on some of them. ACH!

Rock and Roll? Ah yeah....well that ranges from Chuck Berry to more avant-garde styles.

So what about the Avant Garde? That's a term that can apply to any genre or style...or even period! What the fuck?? Kronos Quartet?

It's hard being a music nerd. It truly truly is. You have no idea.

When you ask most people what they like, they just say, "all kinds."

I KNOW THOSE PEOPLE ARE LYING!

How? Because I then say, "oh who is your favorite polka artist?"
I am met with odd stares, and then the obligatory, "I don't like polka."

"You told me you like everything."

"Well not polka."

"Liar!"

So, with that being said I will continue. I am tired of being asked what kinds of music I like. Why? Because it would take all day and night for me to tell you everything that I listen to and know a great deal about. What's worse is that I will forget most of the stuff I want to tell you. Here, finally, is the end all and be all of my music collection, as well as what I know, love, and hate about this thing called music. May I never again have to explain "what kinds of music i like."

World Music and New Age
There are too many things to put on one page, so click below on the appropriate musical topic in this all too general heading.

World music. What does this mean? Isn't any music that comes out of the planet "World Music?"

Well that's not what they say. But they're assholes. Who the fuck is "they" anyway? "They" say it's gonna rain. "They" say we should kill the Iraqis. "They" say we should like a certain brand of toilet paper. Fuck them.

But for lack of a better heading I have to put "World" music so that you may understand what I am talking about. It means music that comes from cultures other than our own. As if we have a culture?

The bigger kick in the arse in this area is that much of the "World" music comes right out of our own country, or just north in Canada. Is it really world music at that point?

Is it "World" music when skanky Shakira sings a boring American type of pop song, but she isn't from America? By that standard, U2 is also "World" music because they are from Ireland.

I will dare say that I would rather call this genre, if it can be called a genre, "Stuff That Has A Cultural Root."

New Age music is another horrible generalization. How we can put quality New Age music like older Enya into the same category as overblown Elevator music like Yanni is beyond me. New Age has become a marker for anything that cannot be classified on its own. Flamenco Jazz Fusion guitarist Ottmar Liebert shares nothing with recordings of electronic noises with people shaking rattles and chanting, and yet....both are in the same part of the record store.
