Van Sant Bridge is a covered bridge in Solebury, PA. There are several conflicting legends as to why and what the hauntings are all about.
It is also known as "Crybaby Bridge" because it is alleged that one can hear a ghostly baby crying underneath of it.
One story contends that accused witches drowned their babies under the bridge so as to avoid having them taken by the authorites. I can tell you that it is total bullshit because the bridge dates to the mid-19th century and witchhunts were long over by then, especially in America.
Another contends that a woman and her baby were murdered under the bridge.
Still other stories paint a picture of horse thieves hung as punishment in the beams, and supposedly you can see the figure of a man hanging on dark nights.
Either way, the bridge is a big attraction for ghost hunters and local hooligans alike, and in any case, it is truly as eerie location on a dark night. But it is totally beautiful as well; with great dark skies filled with stars, a quiet wind, and the gently babbling Pidcock Creek below.
The bridge is almost romantic, and has a certain rustic charm that makes you stop and smile at the beauty of the old Pennsylvania landscape.
